A hip exoskeleton is two small motors, one on each side of your pelvis, held in a frame that straps to your waist and thighs.
It reads your stride
Sensors track the angle and speed of each leg roughly a thousand times a second. When your leg starts to swing forward, the motor on that side adds torque in the same direction you are already moving. When you stand still, it does nothing.
The result is not a feeling of being pushed. It is the feeling of the hill being less steep than it looks.
Where you notice it
- Sustained climbs. The longer the ascent, the bigger the difference. On flat ground you will barely register it.
- Coming down. This is the one people do not expect. You arrive at the descent with legs that still work.
- Under load. A heavy pack is where assistance earns its weight fastest.
Where you will not
Scrambling, anything requiring high steps, technical ground where your legs move in ways a hip joint does not predict. It is built for walking and climbing, not for climbing routes.
The honest tradeoff
You are adding 2.5 kg to your body. That is real, and you feel it for the first kilometre. Past that, on any climb worth the name, it pays for itself several times over. On a flat two-hour walk it is dead weight.
Battery and charging
Charge over USB-C. Summit and Summit Pro take a removable pack you can change without unclipping the frame, which matters more than it sounds when your hands are cold.
Cold reduces range, as it does with any lithium battery. Below freezing, expect less than the rated figure.
